The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens that we have written about in the winter is now finally in stock and available for shipping.   Based on the reviews of those lucky enough to receive one, it appears that the lens is everything Nikon promised.

NIKKOR 500mm

Coming in at 9.2 inches and 3.2 pounds, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens is significantly smaller than most full-frame 500mm lenses. The reason is the incorporation of a Phase Fresnel lens element. Featured in the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR, which was released in January 2015, the Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element compensates for chromatic aberration utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon.

Compared to most camera lenses, which use an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, the PF lens element is able to achieve a remarkably compact and lightweight body with fewer lens elements.

For those who travel, hike or otherwise lug their telephoto lens around, Nikon’s latest addition is a gamechanger. The best part about the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens is that you don’t have to trade image quality for a smaller lens. The optical performance is outstanding.

Below are several other key features:

  • F-Mount Lens/FX Format
  • Aperture Range: f/5.6 to f/32
  • One Phase Fresnel Element
  • Three Extra-Low Dispersion Elements
  • Nano Crystal & Super Integrated Coatings
  • Silent Wave Motor AF System
  • Vibration Reduction, Sport/Tripod Modes
  • Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
  • Detachable, Rotatable Tripod Collar

Due to its compact size, Nikon’s latest telephoto lens handles better than its predecessors and the competition. Intended to be used in the field, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is also extensively weather-sealed and includes a protective front meniscus with Nikon’s Fluorine Coating (FLC).

The lens comes with a hefty price tag, selling for $3,596.95. But considering the cost of the heavier 500 mm lens and considering the fact that you won’t need to buy a new tripod and camera mount, it’s really a bargain.

if you have the money to spend on a new high-end lens, you certainly won’t regret investing in the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens.

The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens is compatible with the D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
