As Jean-Luc Godard aptly described, “When you photograph a face, you photograph the soul behind it.  What is the best lens to use for portrait photography? When shooting portraits, your lens should deliver a sharply defined subject with just the right amount of bokeh. For owners of Nikon DSLRs, there are several great options at a variety of different price points. The good news is that you don’t have to break the bank to create stunning portrait photography. If you are in the market for a new portrait lens for your Nikon, below are several models to put on your…

Novoflex recently introduced the new Nikon F Lens to Leica SL/T Camera Body Lens Adapter. The adapter could be a game changer for photographers who own a lot of Nikon lenses, but would like to try a Leica body. The Novoflex lens adapter allows photographers to use Nikon F-mount lenses on the Leica T or Leica SL camera bodies. The latest adapter is designed to extend the range of available lenses for the Leica SL to Nikon E-type NIKKOR lenses. Nikkor lenses with electronic aperture control were previously incompatible with Novoflex lens adapters. According to Novoflex, 13 Nikon E-type NIKKOR…

Now that Nikon has refreshed the classic 24-70 f./2.8 and included VR, what other Nikon lenses do photographers want most? Sigma has been catching up to the quality of Nikon optics. Many consider the new art series Sigma 35mm and 50mm prime lenses superior to their Nikon equivalents. Perhaps a good way to approach the “what next” question for Nikon would be to anticipate Sigma. Nikon has a hit with the new technology they are using in the 300mm f./4 lens VR2 recently released. This could become a line of fixed lenses—400mm; 500mm and 600mm. Even if the focal length…

In July, Nikon announced the addition of two new full frame telephoto lenses. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR has a focal length of 500 mm, while the AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR has a focal length of 600 mm. Thanks to the addition of two fluorite elements, Nikon boasts that the lenses are “the world’s lightest lenses available at their respective focal lengths.” Compared to their predecessors, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR weighs 20 percent less, while the AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR is 25 percent lighter. Of course, the…

Following up on the success of the two previous Sigma art lens series lenses—35mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.4—a choice between the new Sigma 24mm f./1.4 or Nikon 20mm f./1.4 released around the same time looked like it might be tough. Now that the reviews are in, it would appear that the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 is not quite up to the standard of their other Art Lens Series lenses. Nikon purists can buy the new Nikon 20mm f/1.8 knowing that photographers without Sigma Stigmaphobia won’t best them. The general consensus among reviewers is that the Sigma’s latest addition to the wildly…

Nikon claims that the D810 is the best Digital SLR it has ever released. Many of the early reviews agree. Are the changes in the D810 significant enough to upgrade if you already own the D800 or D800E? The D810 is an incredible camera, with a number of well thought out improvements over previous models. But, for most amateur photographers, the differences between the models do not justify the spread of about $1500 it might cost to sell the D800 and buy the D810. Depending on your personal preferences or photography demands, there are a few features that may convince…

The three Nikkor FX lenses that need a refresh the most include two of Nikon’s biggest sellers and an old Nikkor lens that competes with a better Sigma alternative. Probably Nikon’s best selling lens is the second of what is known as the “holy trinity” of lenses for professional photographers, the Nikkor 24-70 f./2.8G ED.  This lens was first produced in 2007 and is priced at about $1900.  It is remains a great lens and a favorite “standard” lens for professionals, but it does not offer vibration reduction. Tamron introduced a strong competitor with its SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC…

The Nikon D800 has received glowing reviews and with good reason.  The D800 is not just another model Nikon camera.  It is the next step in the evolution of digital photography. The 32 megapixel full frame Nikon D800 has a resolution that compares favorably to medium format cameras.  A quality high resolution print size of 30 X 20 is achievable without resizing. In addition to amazing resolution, the D800 performs well with a high ISO and has an auto focus speed that blows away anything Nikon makes other than the D4.  High ISO of up to 800 is achievable without…
